NB. This only applies if you have a version of ArticleMS before 2.2. From 2.2 onwards there is an automatic update feature built-in.

If you are upgrading from a version before 2.0, please go here.

Before you start:

Make a backup of your current site, including a backup of the templates.

You can backup your site using one of the utitities provided by your host.
To backup the templates you can export them:

The upgrade will preserve all of your current articles, members and comments, but some of the template modifactions will be lost.

Step 1: Upgrade ArticleMS

1: Login to your admin panel, and unselect the 'site enabled' option under settings.

2: Upload all the files from the new version (except the settings.php file and the templates), replacing all of your current files.

3: Visit yoursite.com/install/upgrade.php in a browser. (if your site is www.example.com you should open www.example.com/install/upgrade.php )

4: Select your current version of ArticleMS and hit upgrade. Be sure to only hit the upgrade button once. If you have a large number of articles it can take up to 30 minutes for the upgrade to finish.

Step 2: Upgrade your templates

Your site has now been upgraded, but it will not work until you also upgrade the template. To do so log into your admin control panel, and under templates select the 'Manage Skins' link. Then follow the update link next to your template.

Final Steps:

Make sure to delete the /install/ directory, keeping it is a serious security risk.

To install ArticleMS:

   1. Extract files from the ZIP.
   2. Rename settings.php.txt to settings.php, and upload all the extracted files to your hosting space.
   3. Setup permissions to writable for the following files and directories:
      Files:
        settings.php (chmod 666)
      Directories:
        /uploads/ (chmod 777)
        /uploads/images/ (chmod 777)
        /uploads/files/ (chmod 777)
        /skins/export/ (chmod 777)
        /skins/ (chmod 777)
        /pdf/ (chmod 777)
/_cache/ (chmod 777) (if you want to enable caching)
/plugins/export/ (chmod 777) (if you plan to develop plugins)
   4. If you don't already have a database created, create one using
your host's provided tools. (You may use an existing database if
you like, if you have one.) Also be sure you've set up a mysql
username and given the username access to this database.
   5. Using your web browser, visit /install/index.php (in the directory you
      uploaded it to).
   6. Follow the instructions on screen, supplying your database info
and creating an administrative username and password -- be sure to
      remember your password.
   7. Once the installation is complete, you must delete the /install/ directory, as it can be a security risk.
